In today’s Gospel, the Pharisees approach Jesus with what appears to be a warning: “Go away, leave this area because Herod wants to kill you.” Jesus’ response is anything but fearful. Instead, He continues His mission with unwavering determination, proclaiming that nothing will distract Him from accomplishing the Father’s will.
I don’t know about you, but I can relate to wanting to change course when obstacles to a smooth path crop up. When criticism comes, plans unravel, or troubles seem to multiply, my first instinct is often to find the nearest exit. I am the biggest fan of the path of least resistance! Surely there must be an easier path, right?
Yet Jesus demonstrates something radically different. He knows suffering awaits Him in Jerusalem. He understands the rejection, the pain, and ultimately the Cross that lies ahead. Trusting the goodness of the Father, He is unfettered. Aware of the necessity of the suffering to come in the Crucifixion, to bring the rest of the Father’s children into right relationship and open the gates of Heaven for us. Courage is not acting in spite of fear but in the face of it. Jesus’ sacrifice will forever remain unmatched.
What touches my heart most in this passage is Jesus’ lament over Jerusalem: “…how many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings.” These are not the words of an angry judge. They are the words of a loving Savior whose heart breaks when His people refuse His embrace. My heart breaks when I realize how often I have been the chick scurrying away from the hen’s protective wing!
Jesus embodies that courage, not the absence of fear, but strengthened and emboldened by faithfulness in the midst of it. He calls us to trust His loving care, remembering He is in the Father, and the Father is in Him. Instead of running, let us tuck ourselves under His protective wings; there we discover the refuge, strength, and peace we’ve been seeking all along.
