If there is one thing of which we are all certain, it is that we will one day die. We don’t know the circumstances of that moment in which we will close our eyes to this earth and open them to eternity. We don’t know when that moment will come upon us. The certainty of our death, however, binds us all together as mortal beings. “You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

Jesus tells us today how to prepare for that inevitable meeting with him in death. “Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing [his master’s will].” In this parable, Jesus tells us that the narrow way actually gives freedom and opens the door to the death of the saints of God, a death very precious in the sight of God. The narrow way, the faithful way of the servant who does his master’s will, is constituted by the day in and day out ordinary living of the virtues. 

Most of us won’t be like the unfaithful servant who says to himself, “‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk.” However, there are small and subtle ways in which we refuse our Lord the faithful service and obedient love that is his due. 

Take some time today to immerse yourself in the abundant life that this parable promises. Name three things you are grateful for and three ways God has unexpectedly blessed you. Arouse sentiments of gratitude and wonder at the ways God has preserved you and provided for you all these years. Then very humbly, ask him to help you see one area of your life in which he is calling you to greater fidelity. Perhaps it is in a situation or relationship, or an attitude or way of speaking, the way you characterize certain groups of people or cling to possessions. Wait very quietly until you begin to understand in simple honesty what God is asking of you. Perhaps write in a journal some practical ways God is calling you to choose fidelity in the small everyday simple things of life. 

St. Bernard of Clairvaux wrote: “How consoling it is to see a just man die! …From this bed of mourning, whereon he leaves a precious load of virtues, he goes to take possession of the true land of the living, Jesus acknowledges him as His brother and as His friend, for he has died to the world before closing his eyes from its dazzling light. Such is the death of the saints, a death very precious in the sight of God.”

Rejoice, for in following God’s invitation you will find yourself weighed down with the “precious load of virtues,” prepared for the hour in which you will close your eyes to this earth and open them in eternity.

Si hay algo de lo que todos estamos seguros es que algún día moriremos. No sabemos las circunstancias de ese momento en que cerraremos los ojos a esta tierra y los abriremos a la eternidad. No sabemos cuándo nos llegará ese momento. La certeza de nuestra muerte, sin embargo, nos une a todos como seres mortales. “Pues también ustedes estén preparados, porque a la hora en que menos lo piensen, vendrá el Hijo del hombre”.

Jesús nos dice hoy cómo prepararnos para ese inevitable encuentro con él en la muerte. “Dichoso ese siervo, si el amo, a su llegada, lo encuentra cumpliendo con su deber.” En esta parábola, Jesús nos dice que el camino angosto en realidad da libertad y abre la puerta a la muerte de los santos de Dios, una muerte muy preciosa a los ojos de Dios. El camino angosto, el camino fiel del siervo que hace la voluntad de su amo, está constituido por la vivencia ordinaria de las virtudes día tras día.

La mayoría de nosotros no seremos como el siervo infiel que se dice a sí mismo: “Mi amo tardará en llegar”, y comienza a golpear a los siervos y a las siervas, a comer, a beber y a emborracharse. Sin embargo, hay formas pequeñas y sutiles en las que negamos a nuestro Señor el servicio fiel y el amor obediente que le corresponde.

Tómate un tiempo hoy para sumergirte en la vida abundante que promete esta parábola. Nombra tres cosas por las que estás agradecido y tres formas en que Dios te ha bendecido inesperadamente. Despierta sentimientos de gratitud y asombro por las formas en que Dios te ha preservado y provisto durante todos estos años. Luego, muy humildemente, pídele que te ayude a ver una área de tu vida en la que te está llamando a una mayor fidelidad. Tal vez sea en una situación o relación, o una actitud o forma de hablar, la forma en que caracterizas a ciertos grupos de personas o te aferras a las posesiones. Espera en silencio hasta que comiences a comprender con honestidad sencilla lo que Dios te está pidiendo. Tal vez escriba en un diario algunas formas prácticas en que Dios te está llamando a elegir la fidelidad en las pequeñas cosas cotidianas y sencillas de la vida.

San Bernardo de Claraval escribió: “¡Qué consolador es ver morir a un hombre justo! …Desde este lecho de luto, sobre el que deja una preciosa carga de virtudes, va a tomar posesión de la verdadera tierra de los vivos, Jesús lo reconoce como su hermano y como su amigo, pues ha muerto al mundo antes de cerrar los ojos de su luz deslumbrante. Tal es la muerte de los santos, una muerte muy preciosa a los ojos de Dios.”

Alégrate, porque siguiendo la invitación de Dios te encontrarás cargado con la “preciosa carga de las virtudes”, preparado para la hora en que cerrarás los ojos en esta tierra y los abrirás en la eternidad.
