We have been saved by grace, out of God’s great love and mercy for each one of us. “It is the gift of God,” St. Paul reminds us in today’s first reading. “For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for good works that God has prepared in advance that we should live in them.”
We do not need anything more than that gift of salvation by grace and the good works God is asking of us. We do not need more of any created thing at all. Do we have basic needs for food, clothing, shelter, transportation, education, and medical care? Yes. But here is a question to consider, “do you want basic or does it need to be more?” And will you really use more?
I have a basic gym membership. If I upgrade, I can use massage chairs and red-light therapy. I can upgrade without it causing an issue in my budget. But I do not upgrade. Why? Because if I had extra time I would rather go to the beach, with fresh air and nature, which is quite relaxing. When you have the option to upgrade from basic, do you do it?
Jesus is not saying no to all created things. He wants us to put created things in their proper order and place. God is first, family, work, ministry – nothing is to come between you and God. Only or mostly thinking of ourselves and our comfort is a form of greed. When we put God first, we will learn what “good works” have been prepared for us to accomplish. And that is where we focus.
It is pointless to focus on money and possessions; those things are fleeting and as Jesus points out in the parable, we do not know when we will be called to leave this world. Let us not make the accumulation of money and possessions or comfort or education our focus. We are to keep our gaze on what is eternal, not on what is temporary.
God is not against wealth or created things. He is against selfishness and greed. We are to use all that we have in our lives to serve God and those He has given to us to care for. We are to put ourselves at His disposal. Today, spend some time in prayer asking what you might be putting before God. And then, find a way to change that.
Debemos ponernos a Su disposición.
