I’m sure you’ve all heard the phrase “putting on a show”. In college my now husband spent a lot of time in musical theater, which meant I spent a lot of time in musical theater as well. Although I wasn’t an actor or even on stage crew, I hung out and watched everything that had to happen for the show to come together. And let me tell you, from stepped on crumbs from the snack station, spilled water from the teapot, and costumes thrown into piles from every quick change, everything was chaotic and messy.
When I read today’s Gospel, I can’t help but remember those times and think that’s exactly what Jesus is warning about in our spiritual lives. On the outside, our makeup is done, our hair is tamed, our costumes are ready and the stage is set for a perfect performance, but we absolutely cannot live the most crucial aspect of our beings as simply a performance, where the second we step off stage our “behind the scenes” is ugly and messy.
Jesus also reminds us today that the one who made the outside, made the inside as well. We were not made for duplicity or for performance, but with our free will, sometimes that’s what we choose. I hope we can all take time today to look behind our curtains and ask God to show us where in our lives we are merely performing and show us how to purify our hearts so they will reflect cleanliness on the outside as well.
