We cannot do anything without God. That is my one sentence summation of the readings. But I suspect my editor and you good readers want a bit more.

God multiplies, adds on to, makes greater, and enriches all we do when we do it for His glory. He builds on what He has already created, His creatures. He builds on us because he loves us and wants to give us everything. And, in the fullness of time, we will have everything. Even now, while we are here on this earth, we have so much. Many of us have all that we want and need. And yet, we may worry over what is happening next and will there be enough. Will I have enough time or money or love or patience or…well, the list is long at times.

These readings remind us that we will have what we need if we honor God first with what He has given us. And then, it will be made more. Like a seed, we must be willing to be broken so that what is inside of us will come forth. Being broken can sound painful. Sometimes it is. But when God asks us to break open it is for the good. A much greater good than ourselves.

It is the difference between having a soul that is fertile or a soul that is full of rocks or thorns. Soil, like our soul, needs to be given food and tilled, debris removed, and smoothed out. Sometimes soil is given a rest before something new is planted. 

Our soul needs God. It needs food, as in the sacraments of our Church. Confession for removing the debris. Prayer helps to smooth us out and prepares us for the next thing God is calling on us to do. In our spiritual life, our soul helps us love God and do His will. Do what you can to allow Him to speak to you and not be swayed by the world with all of its anxieties and pleasures. Our greatest pleasure comes from being with God, both now and one day in Heaven. In this life, let us all do what helps us to be holy.

No podemos hacer nada sin Dios. Esa es mi síntesis de las lecturas en una sola frase. Pero sospecho que mi editora, y ustedes, amables lectores, desean un poco más.

Dios multiplica, añade, engrandece y enriquece todo lo que hacemos cuando lo hacemos para Su gloria. Él edifica sobre lo que ya ha creado en sus criaturas. Él edifica sobre nosotros porque nos ama y desea darnos todo. Y, en la plenitud de los tiempos, lo tendremos todo. Incluso ahora, mientras estamos aquí en esta tierra, poseemos muchísimo. Muchos de nosotros tenemos todo lo que deseamos y necesitamos. Y, sin embargo, es posible que nos inquietemos por lo que sucederá a continuación y nos preocupemos por si habrá suficiente. ¿Tendré suficiente tiempo, dinero, amor, paciencia? A veces la lista se hace larga.

Estas lecturas nos recuerdan que tendremos lo que necesitamos si honramos primero a Dios con lo que Él nos ha dado. Y luego, eso se multiplicará. Al igual que una semilla, debemos estar dispuestos a ser quebrantados para que lo que llevamos por dentro pueda manifestarse. Ser quebrantado puede sonar doloroso. A veces lo es. Pero cuando Dios nos pide que nos abramos, es para nuestro bien; para un bien mucho mayor que nosotros mismos.

Es la diferencia entre tener un alma fértil o un alma repleta de rocas o espinas. La tierra —al igual que nuestra alma— necesita ser nutrida y labrada; hay que retirarle los escombros y allanarla. A veces, se le concede un periodo de descanso antes de sembrar algo nuevo en ella.

Nuestra alma necesita a Dios. Necesita alimento, tal como el que recibe a través de los sacramentos de nuestra Iglesia. Necesita la Confesión para retirar los escombros. La oración nos ayuda a allanar nuestro interior y nos prepara para la siguiente tarea a la que Dios nos llama. En nuestra vida espiritual, el alma nos capacita para amar a Dios y cumplir Su voluntad. Hagan todo lo que esté a su alcance para permitirle a Él hablarles, y no se dejen arrastrar por el mundo, con todas sus ansiedades y placeres. Nuestro mayor placer reside en estar con Dios, tanto ahora como, un día, en el Cielo. En esta vida, dediquémonos todos a hacer lo que nos ayude a alcanzar la santidad.
