December marks the final month of the year. It is a month that both flies and crawls by. For children, it is possibly the longest month of the whole year as they await the arrival of Christmas. For adults with children around, it is possibly the shortest, with all the holiday planning, festivities, school parties, shopping, and seemingly endless opportunities for sugar. Depending on your life circumstances, this time of year may mark the beginning of a difficult season, making time appear to either speed up or slow down as the holiday countdowns swirl around you.
No matter the season of your life, there is something you cannot change: the days do pass. The end of the year arrives, and whether it feels like a blink or an eternity, the days do pass. Jesus says in our Gospel that, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” Time is an ever-moving thing, much like the wind. We cannot catch it in our hands, we cannot control where or how it blows. Time is always steadily moving onward to whatever end. There is a real sense of being out of control when it comes to time, and that is hugely uncomfortable. It doesn’t matter how much I wish my kids would slow down their growing up or slow the aging of my parents. It doesn’t matter how much I desire the freight train to hurry up through the crossing or how desperately I want to find out now where our duty station will be next year.
Time passes at its own pace without my consent. I think you can fill-in the blanks here for situations you find in your own life. However, rather than spending all of your time thinking about the ways time is outside of your control, let’s shift our attention to the second half of what Jesus said. “My words will not pass away.” While time passes, Jesus is fixed. Jesus is outside of time, time means nothing and holds nothing over God. God is the creator of time and as such is free to move in and out, over and under, around or through time as He wills.
This is one of the things that is so radical about the Incarnation. God, by becoming man, subjected Himself even to time. Jesus didn’t arrive on this earth a full grown adult, ready to carry out His mission. He came as a baby. He had to wait for His mother to feed Him. He had to wait in anticipation for a birthday present or a loaf of bread to bake. He knew the struggle of time passing too quickly, or not quickly enough. While God is outside of time, He intimately understands all the struggles we have with time.
No matter how you feel about the coming season, spend some time thanking Jesus for the gift of time. Thank Him also that regardless of time, His presence is always constant in your life.
Diciembre es el último mes del año. Es un mes que pasa volando y al mismo tiempo va lentísimo. Para los niños es posiblemente el mes más largo de todo el año mientras esperan la llegada de la Navidad. Para los adultos con niños, es posiblemente el más corto, con toda la planificación de vacaciones, festividades, fiestas escolares, compras y oportunidades aparentemente infinitas para el azúcar. Dependiendo de las circunstancias de su vida, esta época del año puede marcar el comienzo de una temporada difícil, haciendo que el tiempo parezca acelerarse o alentarse mientras contamos los días hasta que lleguen las fiestas.
Hay algo que no podemos cambiar, sea lo que sea la época que estamos viviendo: los días siguen pasando. Llega el final del año, y aunque parezca un parpadeo o una eternidad, los días pasan. Jesús dice en el Evangelio que “Podrán dejar de existir el cielo y la tierra, pero mis palabras no dejarán de cumplirse”. El tiempo se mueve constantemente, como el viento. No podemos atraparlo en las manos, no podemos controlar dónde o cómo sopla. El tiempo siempre avanza constantemente. A veces nos sentimos fuera de control cuando se trata del tiempo, y nos incómoda bastante. No importa cuánto desee que se retrase el crecimiento de mis hijos o el envejecimiento de mis padres. No importa cuánto desee que el tren de carga se apresure a cruzar el cruce o cuán desesperadamente quiera saber ahora dónde estará nuestro lugar de destino el próximo año.
El tiempo pasa a su propio ritmo sin mi consentimiento. Creo que podrías poner ejemplos de situaciones que encuentres en tu propia vida. Sin embargo, en lugar de pasar todo tu tiempo pensando en las formas en que el tiempo está fuera de tu control, dirijamos nuestra atención a la segunda mitad de lo que dijo Jesús. “Mis palabras no dejarán de cumplirse”. Mientras pasa el tiempo, Jesús se queda. Jesús está fuera del tiempo, el tiempo no significa nada y no tiene nada sobre Dios. Dios es el Creador del tiempo y, como tal, es libre de moverse hacia adentro y hacia afuera, por encima y por debajo, alrededor o a través del tiempo, según Su voluntad.
Esta es una de las cosas que es tan radical acerca de la Encarnación. Dios, al hacerse hombre, se sujetó incluso al tiempo. Jesús no llegó a esta tierra como un adulto ya grande, listo para llevar a cabo Su misión. Vino como un bebé. Tenía que esperar a que su madre lo alimentara. Tenía que esperar con anticipación un regalo de cumpleaños o que una hogaza de pan saliera del horno. Entendía la pelea con el tiempo que pasaba demasiado rápido o no lo suficientemente rápido. Si bien Dios está fuera del tiempo, comprende íntimamente todas las batallas que tenemos con el tiempo.
Aunque puedas tener sentimientos variados acerca de la próxima temporada, toma unos momentos para agradecer a Jesús por el regalo del tiempo. Agradécele también que independientemente del tiempo, Su presencia siempre es constante en tu vida.
