Today’s Gospel presupposes a search, first on the part of Jesus, whom we can see is on the lookout for followers, and secondly on the part of those who would come to know Jesus closely. We reckon this because Philip readily follows Jesus and then goes to tell Nathanael. The two of them have obviously been conversing about “the one about whom Moses wrote in the Law” and even though Nathanael has definite ideas about those who come “from Nazareth” he still readily accepts Philip’s invitation to “come and see.” 

If I place myself in this Gospel scene, what does it mean for Jesus to search for me? He is searching for me to follow him. How so on this 5th day of January in 2024? What does the Lord have in mind as he searches for the likes of me to come along with him today?

In a way, I don’t have to worry about answering that because he who created the heavens and set the stars in place can certainly communicate himself and his will to me. I can be confident and trust that he will inspire me, put people in my path, and make his will known to me if I but listen. He is with me on the journey too, every step of the way! Reflecting on this passage, I see how the Lord worked with the disciples and I know that he continues to work with me and with each one of us now. 

Today’s saint, John Neumann is an example for us. He had doubts about accepting the office of bishop partly because he was personally challenged by his own difficulties with administration. But Neumann entrusted himself totally to the Lord’s will, which was obviously manifested to him by the Pope’s request that he become the 4th bishop of Philadelphia. In St. John Neumann’s search to do the will of God, and by leaving himself open to see and hear that will, he grew to be the disciple the Lord wanted him to be, shining brightly as a witness of goodness, seeking the lost sheep, ministering to the sick, and caring for all those entrusted to him. It wasn’t always easy, but as Neumann sought out and followed the Lord he made the world a more blessed place.

The Lord searched for those first disciples and helped them see. He searched for and found St. John Neumann and called him to follow him as well. The Lord, who first searched for them, gave them the grace to search for him, to find him and to see aright so as to follow him faithfully. This Lord Jesus is still on the move, searching for us and calling us to follow him. How will I follow him today? How will I lean on him to help me? What questions will I have for him today? What is he showing me? I need only ask and he will help me follow his lead, no matter what the cost.

El evangelio de hoy supone una búsqueda, primero por parte de Jesús, a quien vemos buscando seguidores, y segundo, por parte de los que quieren conocer a Jesús de cerca. Calculamos esto porque Felipe sigue fácilmente a Jesús y luego va a contárselo a Nen la ley” y aunque Natanael tiene ideas definidas sobre los que vienen “de Nazaret”, todavía acepta de buena gana la invitación de Felipe de “Ven y lo verás”. Si me coloco en este escenario evangélico, ¿qué significa que Jesús me busque? Él me está buscando para seguirlo. ¿Cómo es eso en este día 5 de enero del 2024? ¿Qué tiene el Señor en mente al buscar personas como yo para acompañarlo hoy?

En cierto modo, no tengo que preocuparme por responder eso porque aquel que creó los cielos y colocó las estrellas en su lugar ciertamente puede comunicarme a sí mismo y su voluntad. Puedo tener confianza en que él me inspirará, pondrá personas en mi camino y me hará conocer su voluntad si tan solo escucho. ¡Él también está conmigo a lo largo del camino y en cada paso del camino! Reflexionando sobre este pasaje, veo cómo el Señor trabajó con los discípulos y sé que ahora sigue trabajando conmigo y con cada uno de nosotros.

El santo de hoy, Juan Neumann, es un ejemplo para nosotros. Tenía dudas sobre aceptar el cargo de obispo, en parte porque personalmente se enfrentaba a sus propias dificultades con la administración. Pero Neumann se entregó totalmente a la voluntad del Señor, que se le manifestó evidentemente con la petición del Papa de convertirse en el cuarto obispo de Filadelfia. En la búsqueda de San Juan Neumann de hacer la voluntad de Dios, y al abrirse a ver y oír esa voluntad, creció hasta convertirse en el discípulo que el Señor quería que fuera, brillando intensamente como testigo de la bondad, buscando a la oveja perdida, ministrando a los enfermos y cuidando de todos los que le habían sido confiados. No siempre era fácil, pero cuando Neumann buscó y siguió al Señor, hizo del mundo un lugar más bendito.

El Señor buscó a esos primeros discípulos y les ayudó a ver. Buscó y encontró a San Juan Neumann y lo llamó para que también lo siguiera. El Señor, que los buscó primero, les dio la gracia de buscarlo, de encontrarlo y de ver bien para seguirlo fielmente. Este Señor Jesús sigue en movimiento, buscándonos y llamándonos a seguirlo. ¿Cómo lo seguiré hoy? ¿Cómo me apoyaré en él para que me ayude? ¿Qué preguntas tendré para él hoy? ¿Qué me está mostrando? Sólo necesito pedírselo y él me ayudará a seguir su ejemplo, cueste lo que cueste.
