I know there are people who think I’m crazy because I enjoy living in Michigan, which is likened to a frozen, sunless tundra for close to half of the year. I always explain to them that I love the change of seasons, the abundance of tall trees, the lakes and rivers, and the fact that it was tucked between the Great Lakes and doesn’t often have tornadoes and never has hurricanes.
But one of the main reasons I like Michigan is because of the milder summers. My family loves to be outside, but my husband and kiddos do not do well in the heat. I lived in Kentucky for several years and I remember opening my door at 8am to go to work and being hit with a blast of hot, humid air. At 8am!! Then in the afternoon when I would get in my car to head home I couldn’t even touch the steering wheel without burning my fingers because the sun had been beating on it all day. No thank you. I will take highs in the 70’s and 80’s any day.
Perhaps today is one of those “dog days of summer” so to speak. Perhaps we are thirsty, dripping with sweat and just want to spend all day in the air conditioning. But then we remember that summer is so short and the snow will fall before we know it, and we go outside anyway, even if only for a good dose of Vitamin D.
One thing is for certain, whether it be winter or summer, spring or fall, each season is a gift from the Lord. Whether we be hot or cold, rested or tired, every breath we take is from the Lord. Whether we are rich or poor, hungry or full, all we have comes from the Lord in His goodness. Please join me in praying today’s Psalm of praise:
Praise the name of the LORD;
Praise, you servants of the LORD
Who stand in the house of the LORD,
in the courts of the house of our God.
Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good;
sing praise to his name, which we love;
For the LORD has chosen Jacob for himself,
Israel for his own possession.
For I know that the LORD is great;
our LORD is greater than all gods.
All that the LORD wills he does
in heaven and on earth
in the seas and in all the deeps.
Sé que hay personas que piensan que estoy loca porque disfruto vivir en Michigan, que se asemeja a una tundra congelada y sin sol durante casi la mitad del año. Siempre les explico que me encanta el cambio de estaciones, la abundancia de árboles altos, los lagos y ríos, y el hecho de que está escondido entre los Grandes Lagos y no suele tener tornados ni huracanes.
Pero una de las razones principales por las que me gusta Michigan es por los veranos más templados. A mi familia le encanta estar afuera, pero a mi esposo y a mis hijos no les gusta el calor. Vivía en Kentucky durante varios años y recuerdo abrir mi puerta a las 8 am para ir a trabajar y recibir una ráfaga de aire caliente y húmedo. ¡¡A las 8 de la mañana!! Luego, en la tarde, cuando entraba en mi carro para regresar a casa, ni siquiera podía tocar el volante sin quemarme los dedos porque el sol lo había calentando todo el día. No gracias. Prefiero temperaturas máximas en los 70s y 80s cualquier día.
Tal vez hoy sea uno de esos “días pésimas de verano”, por así decirlo. Tal vez tengamos sed, estemos empapados de sudor y solo queremos pasar todo el día en el aire acondicionado. Pero luego recordamos que el verano es muy corto y la nieve caerá antes de que nos demos cuenta, y salimos de todos modos, aunque solo sea por una buena dosis de vitamina D.
Una cosa es segura, ya que sea invierno o verano, primavera u otoño, cada estación es un regalo del Señor. Ya que sea que estemos calientes o fríos, descansados o cansados, cada respiración que tomamos es don del Señor. Seamos ricos o pobres, hambrientos o satisfechos, todo lo que tenemos proviene del Señor en Su bondad. Les invito a rezar conmigo el Salmo de alabanza de hoy:
Alaben el nombre del Señor,
alábenlo, siervos del Señor,
los que están en la casa del Señor,
en los atrios de la casa de nuestro Dios.
Alaben al Señor, porque es bueno;
alaben su nombre, porque es amable.
El escogió a Jacob,
a Israel como posesión suya.
Yo sé que el Señor es grande,
nuestro Dios, más que todos los dioses.
El Señor hace todo lo que quiere
en el cielo y en la tierra,
en los mares y en los océanos.
