Alleluia! He is Risen! Christ has Risen indeed!
In our fast-paced culture, we often want to skip from one great event to another. Once Christmas is done, we move right into Valentine’s Day and then St. Patrick’s Day and then Easter and then Memorial Day, etc. Or if we are into athletics, perhaps we jump from one sport’s season to another. As soon as the SuperBowl is over, then it’s on to March Madness and then the World Cup and so on. We seem to always need something to look forward to, something to think about that excites us. That may not always be a bad thing, as long as we don’t fail to live each moment as God intends.
Today we are within the Octave of Easter. Easter is such a special feast (the highest of any we celebrate in the Catholic Church) that each day within the Octave is celebrated just like Easter day itself! It is so special that we need eight days to celebrate it! Is that what we are doing today? Are we still celebrating? Are we still pondering the depth of just what the Resurrection means in our lives? Do we realize deep within all that Christ has done to open the gates of heaven for us and allow us to live with Him for all eternity?
Today’s first reading both makes me chuckle and causes me to ponder in awe. The disciples had been arrested for publicly preaching in the name of Jesus and the authorities had no idea what to do with them. They were powerless to do anything to punish them, “on account of the people who were all praising God for what had happened.” Can you imagine being a fly on the wall listening into that conversation? “What are we supposed to do with these guys?” “I dunno, what do you think we should do?” “I dunno, I don’t think we can do anything, can we?” They were dumbfounded because they knew that the people had witnessed the hand of the Almighty.
At the same time, it always amazes me how fearless the Apostles were. They received a stern warning, not once, but twice, and they took it as if it were a pat on the back in encouragement to continue on! They were in perfect obedience to God, not men, and His Holy Spirit was definitely at work among them. They took to heart and put into action Jesus’ command to “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature” (today’s Gospel).
How can we continue to live out our celebration of Easter today? How can we be a part of this incredible mission to proclaim the Gospel to the entire world? How can we be fearless for God in order to help others get to know him? God knows the answer. Let us listen and obey.
¡Aleluya! ¡Ha resucitado! ¡De verdad, Cristo ha resucitado!
En nuestra cultura acelerada, a menudo queremos saltar de un gran evento a otro. Una vez que se termine la Navidad, pasamos directamente al Día de San Valentín y luego al Día de San Patricio y luego a Pascua y luego al Día de los Caídos, etc. O si nos gusta el deporte, tal vez saltemos de una temporada de deporte a otra. Tan pronto como termina el SuperBowl, pasamos a March Madness y luego a la Copa Mundial y así seguimos. Parece que siempre tenemos que estar anticipando algo, o estar pensando en algo que nos emocione. Puede que eso no siempre sea malo, siempre y cuando no dejemos de vivir cada momento como Dios quiere.
Hoy estamos dentro de la Octava de Pascua. La Pascua es una fiesta tan especial (la más alta de todas las que celebramos en la Iglesia Católica) que cada día dentro de la Octava se celebra como el propio día de Pascua. ¡Es tan especial que necesitamos ocho días para celebrarlo! ¿Es eso lo que estamos haciendo hoy? ¿Seguimos celebrando? ¿Seguimos reflexionando sobre la profundidad de lo que significa la Resurrección en nuestras vidas? ¿Nos damos cuenta en lo más profundo de nuestro ser de todo lo que Cristo ha hecho para abrirnos las puertas del cielo y permitirnos vivir con Él por toda la eternidad?
La primera lectura de hoy me hace reír y también me hace reflexionar con asombro. Los discípulos habían sido arrestados por predicar públicamente en el nombre de Jesús y las autoridades no tenían idea de qué deberían hacer con ellos. No podían hacer nada para castigarlos, “ya que el pueblo entero glorificaba a Dios por lo sucedido.” ¿Te imaginas ser una mosca en la pared escuchando esa conversación? “¿Qué se supone que debemos hacer con estos tipos?” “No sé, ¿qué crees que deberíamos hacer?” “No sé, no creo que podamos hacer nada, ¿verdad?” Quedaron estupefactos porque sabían que el pueblo había sido testigo de la mano del Todopoderoso.
Al mismo tiempo, siempre me sorprende lo valientes que eran los Apóstoles. Recibieron una severa advertencia, no una, sino dos veces, ¡y la tomaron como si fuera una palmadita en la espalda para animarlos a seguir adelante! Estaban en perfecta obediencia a Dios, no a los hombres, y Su Espíritu Santo definitivamente estaba obrando entre ellos. Tomaron en serio y pusieron en práctica el mandato de Jesús de “Vayan por todo el mundo y prediquen el Evangelio a toda criatura” (del Evangelio de hoy).
¿Cómo podemos seguir viviendo hoy nuestra celebración de la Pascua? ¿Cómo podemos ser parte de esta increíble misión de proclamar el Evangelio al mundo entero? ¿Cómo podemos ser valientes ante Dios para ayudar a otros a conocerlo? Dios sabe la respuesta. Escuchemos y obedezcamos.
