Recently, a young middle school aged friend asked if we could get a cup of coffee and talk about God and the Church. She had some thoughts. It turned out she had some pretty deep thoughts.
While she strongly considers herself a Catholic, she doesn’t see what the big deal is with which religion someone professes. In her experience, all religions teach basically the same thing and if you are a good person, what difference does it make?
We talked about the truths she considers shared among different religions and cultures: the desire to reach out, the desire to care for others and to be cared for by others. Those truths are part of natural law. They are built into God’s creation. They are built into our hearts and they help answer the great philosophical questions: What is real? What am I? What do I know? What should I do?
St. Paul also addresses these great philosophical questions today. He tells us what is real. Truth, honor, justice, purity, grace, these things are the touchstones of our lives and throughout time can be used to measure what is happening around us. Do the choices I make today bring truth into the world? Are my thoughts and actions honoring others and myself? Am I being just with the next step I take? Am I not only being pure myself, but also helping others to maintain purity of mind and body? Am I acting with grace? These are high standards indeed!
This is the value of celebrating saints’ feast days. Our Mother, the Church, encourages us to pause and take time to get to know those who have traveled before us. As we get to know St. Martin de Porres, we find out that he also helps us answer the great philosophical questions with the example of his life. He lived out the virtues daily. His life gives us a concrete example of how to move from “What am I?” to “What should I do?” His life shows not an abstract concept, but a concrete way of what it means to be Catholic and to love God in and through the Catholic Church. His life is love in action.
As for my young friend, we didn’t even begin to answer all her questions in one trip to the coffee shop, but I look forward to continuing the conversation and introducing her to saints like Martin de Porres along the way. It is only in our home, the Church, that we are able to access the Sacraments and through them, the fullness of God’s grace. I look forward to walking with her as she lives these truths for herself. Then, through God’s grace, she will be able to answer all the beautiful, deep questions in her heart.
Recientemente, una amiga joven de secundaria me preguntó si podríamos tomar un café y hablar sobre Dios y la Iglesia. Tenía algunos pensamientos. Resultó que tenía algunos pensamientos bastante profundos.
Si bien se considera fuertemente católica, no ve cuál es el problema con cualquier religión que alguien profesa. En su experiencia, todas las religiones enseñan básicamente lo mismo y si eres una buena persona, ¿cuál es la diferencia?
Hablamos sobre las verdades que ella considera compartidas entre diferentes religiones y culturas: el deseo de extender la mano, el deseo de cuidar a los demás y de ser cuidada por los demás. Esas verdades son parte de la ley natural. Están integrados en la creación de Dios. Están integrados en nuestros corazones y ayudan a responder las grandes preguntas filosóficas: ¿Qué es real? ¿Quién soy yo? ¿Qué sé yo? ¿Qué tengo que hacer?
San Pablo también aborda hoy estas grandes cuestiones filosóficas. Nos dice lo que es real. La verdad, el honor, la justicia, la pureza, la gracia, estas cosas son las piedras angulares de nuestras vidas y, a lo largo del tiempo, pueden usarse para medir lo que sucede a nuestro alrededor. ¿Las decisiones que tomo hoy traen la verdad al mundo? ¿Mis pensamientos y acciones honran a los demás y a mí mismo? ¿Estoy siendo justo con el siguiente paso que doy? ¿No solo soy puro yo mismo, sino que también ayudo a otros a mantener la pureza de mente y cuerpo? ¿Estoy actuando con gracia? ¡Verdaderamente son estándares altos!
Por eso tiene mucho valor celebrar las fiestas de los santos. Nuestra Madre, la Iglesia, nos anima a hacer una pausa y tomar tiempo para conocer a aquellos que han caminado antes que nosotros. A medida que vayamos conociendo a San Martín de Porres, descubrimos que él también nos ayuda a responder las grandes preguntas filosóficas con el ejemplo de su vida. Vivió las virtudes diariamente. Su vida nos da un ejemplo concreto de cómo pasar del “¿Quién soy yo?” a “¿Qué debo hacer?” Su vida no muestra un concepto abstracto, sino una forma concreta de lo que significa ser católico y amar a Dios en y a través de la Iglesia Católica. Su vida es el amor en acción.
En cuanto a mi amiga joven, no pudimos responder a todas sus preguntas en una sola cita al café, pero espero continuar la conversación y presentarle a santos como Martín de Porres en el camino. Solo en nuestro hogar, la Iglesia, podemos acceder a los Sacramentos y, a través de ellos, la plenitud de la gracia de Dios. Espero caminar con ella mientras vive estas verdades por sí misma. Y así, solo por la gracia de Dios, podrá responder a todas las preguntas hermosas y profundas de su corazón.
